PARIS — Fast-fashion retailers are taking their wares to the countries that usually make them.

Hennes & Mauritz AB said Tuesday it had signed a contract to open its first store in Turkey in Forum Istanbul, the country’s biggest shopping center. The 24,750-square-foot store will open in November, the Swedish retailer said.

Karl-Johan Persson, chief executive officer of H&M, said the company had long had business relations with Turkey, where some of its clothes are produced.

“We are very pleased to open our first store in Turkey. It is an interesting market with a large, young and fashion-conscious population, which offers great potential for future expansion,” Persson said.

Turkey is the third new market for H&M this year following openings in South Korea in February and Israel in March. The retailer plans to open a total of 240 stores worldwide in 2010.

Meanwhile, Spain’s Inditex said it has brought Zara to India, meaning the brand now has a retail presence in 77 countries. The first Zara store — a 19,375-square-foot location — opened last week in the Select City Walk Mall in New Delhi.

Europe’s largest clothing retailer said it was planning a second locale at the DLF Promenade Vasant Kunj mall in New Delhi, in addition to a store in the Palladium Mall shopping center in Mumbai and further locations in the country’s largest cities.

Inditex started its retail expansion in India through a joint venture with Trent Ltd., the retail arm of the Tata Group.

“The country has a dozen cities whose populations each exceed three million people, and the Indian market promises substantial growth potential for Zara’s fashion offering,” Inditex said.
