The Cartoon Network’s sassy and sardonic properties such as the “Powerpuff Girls,” “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Adventure Time,” “Courage the Cowardly Dog” and “Steven Universe” have found a home at Hot Topic.
Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, a.k.a. the Powerpuff Girls, were ur-feminists created when Professor Utonium accidentally got Chemical X into sugar, spice and everything nice. The girls protected Townsville from the evil likes of Mojo Jojo and other villains.
“Cartoons aren’t just for kids,” said Ed Labay, vice president of merchandising at Hot Topic. “This collection was inspired by our favorite retro and new Cartoon Network programs that made us dread the end of summer. The pieces are inspired by the fashion and lifestyle of the different characters, and are a re-imagining of what these characters may have worn in real life.”
A satiny jacket with striped banded hems features a “Powerpuff Girls” logo patch on the front and “Squad Goals” on the back with another patch for $64.90.
“Adventure Time,” stars Finn, “a silly kid who wants to be a hero someday,” according to CN. His best friend and sidekick Jake is a wise old dog with a big heart. Finn and Jake go on adventures, get into some tough scrapes and manage to escape unscathed with help from Princess Bubblegum, Lumpy Space Princess and Marceline. Hot Topic’s black Marceline dress, $44.90, is fit for the wild rocker girl with its tulle overlay and allover guitar design. An A-line minidress with a black Peter Pan collar and allover print of “Adventure Time” characters is $39.90. The Finn hooded sweatshirt, $49.90, has a printed Jake dancing in one of the front pockets and detachable hood (with animal ears) that’s identical to Finn’s signature hat.
The title character of “Steven Universe” is a half-human, half-Gem boy who learns to save the world with the magical powers emanating from his bellybutton. His pals include Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst…you get the idea. The Steven Universe Pearl dress features a turquoise ombre pleated skirt, priced at $59.90, while the Garnet minidress has tulle cap sleeves and a two-star design on the front, $49.90, and the Rose Quartz dress has a rhinestone on its sweetheart neckline and a tulle overlay with an ombré design of Rose’s star and gemstone.
“Courage the Cowardly Dog” followed the misadventures of the canine who was afraid of his own shadow. The fact that he lives in a place called Nowhere lends credence to his fears. Hot Topic’s take on Courage is a varsity-stripe sweater with his owner Eustace Bagge’s Ooga-Booga mask on the chest and the frightened dog peering out of a pocket, $49.90 to $53.90.
Dexter, the boy genius of “Dexter’s Laboratory,” has his hands full trying to invent things while keeping his older sister Dee Dee from ruining his experiments. An A-line dress with a black Peter Pan collar has an allover print of science symbols with an outline of Dexter incorporated in the design, $39.90.
“After working together on the successful Powerpuff Girls collection, we knew Hot Topic would give the same passion and attention to detail to our beloved characters as we do,” said Pete Yoder, vice president of Cartoon Network Enterprises.
