H.W. Carter & Sons, a 10-month-old men’s specialty store in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, has been re-branded as Gentry.

The name change comes as a result of H.W. Carter, a workwear and overall company whose roots date to 1859, selling its brands to Carter’s, Inc., the children’s wear company in late September. As a result, the store, at 127 North 6th Street, between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street, had to be renamed.

The store had sold H.W. Carter merchandise as well as a number of other unrelated men’s wear labels such as Engineered Garments, Our Legacy, Gitman Vintage, Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garçons and Officine Generale.

“The sale of H.W. Carter & Sons brands is an exciting opportunity to update the store from both a visual and product assortment standpoint,” said Gentry’s owner and founder Alan Maleh, who is also editor of Man of the World magazine. “We feel the store has had a positive impact on the retail scene in New York, something we will continue to push forward under the banner of Gentry.”

The name is meant to evoke Gentry Magazine, “an iconic men’s wear publication that many designers still refer back to, with its sense of fun, innovation and classicism,” Maleh added.

Justin Dean, Gentry’s manager and buyer, said the store is a “sophisticated men’s wear shop” that carries brands from around the world. Among the names that will be new to Gentry are Golden Bear varsity jackets for fall and Camoshita by United Arrows, Needles, Barena, Orslow, The Real McCoy’s, Aspesi, East Harbour Surplus, Sunny Sports and Crombie for spring.


The re-branding will be completed by the beginning of the year and will include a new design that is more modern and airy. H.W. Carter had a heritage and vintage vibe.

In addition, Gentry will also launch a Web site under the name gentrynyc.com in November, Dean said.
