• NEW CEO AT ASDA: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has appointed Andy Clarke chief executive officer of Asda, the U.K. supermarket chain. Clarke, who most recently served as chief operating officer of the Wal-Mart-owned chain, succeeds Andy Bond, who last month said he was stepping down as ceo. Bond will serve as chairman of Asda’s executive committee. Doug McMillon, president and ceo of Wal-Mart International, said Clarke, who joined the company in 1992, had “long been identified as a leader” at Asda. Clarke joined Asda as a store manager and rose to retail managing director. He left the company in 2001 to work for Matalan, the British value clothing retailer, and Iceland, a U.K. frozen food chain, and returned to Asda in 2005. Wal-Mart said Clarke would be charged with leading Asda’s efforts to become the U.K.’s market leader in general merchandise and its second largest food retailer within the next five years.
