Joe McFarland has joined J.C. Penney Co. Inc. as executive vice president of stores.
He is a 20-year retail veteran and succeeds Tony Bartlett.
In his new position, McFarland will lead operations for all 1,000 J.C. Penney’s stores. He also will be responsible for the implementation and support of several key corporate initiatives, including in-store fulfillment of Web orders and efforts to improve sales productivity. He also will seek to simplify operations and work with associates to promote a service culture.
Since August, McFarland and his wife have worked on an Atlanta-based nonprofit real estate company that seeks to provide affordable housing to families in need. Before that, he worked at The Home Depot for more than 20 years where he held several positions, most recently serving as president of the northern and western divisions. He was responsible for the sales and operations of up to 800 stores in 24 states and led a team of around 110,000 associates. He is a Gulf War and Desert Storm veteran and served six years in the Marine Corps.
