Though a range of products was purchased for the Mother’s Day holiday gifts, accessories led the overall product categories with handbags as the top item, according to data from Loop Commerce, the parent company of GiftNow, an e-gifting personalization platform and service.
The findings were from an analysis for the holiday weekend that detailed what were the most popular gift options. In order to collate the results, Loop Commerce reviewed purchases made in retailers and brands such as Macy’s Inc., Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Coach and American Giant in addition to others.
Six out of Loop Commerce’s top 10 gifts for Mother’s Day were purses, a Loop Commerce spokesperson said. The apparel section trailed as the second most popular option led by outerwear and activewear. The health and beauty category was the third most popular with fragrances and cosmetics as the top selected items belonging to the segment.
The analysis found that men spent more than women for the holiday, though more females sent gifts using the GiftNow platform. According to the results, women represented 62 percent of the gift-senders for Mother’s Day — men spent 42 percent more than females.
Recipients of gifts via the platform optimized their experiences, a company spokesperson said. Twenty-eight percent customized their gift by changing the size or color and 64 percent of recipients accepted the gifts without making any changes. Most items were sent long distance — 54 percent of gifts purchased on the platform traveled more than 50 miles.
Mobile commerce continues to encroach on spending completed on a desktop. The analysis discovered that consumers browsed and completed purchases on smartphones and tablets the most — 76 percent perused on these devices. Although 24 percent of shoppers browsed on desktops, most purchases were completed in this channel. This is likely changing — mobile purchases made up 40 percent of all gift expenditures.
Loop Commerce extends fully customizable product e-gifting platform with its GiftNow service. The solution-provider offers fully integrated personalization options for online shopping, reducing friction in selecting items for others by allowing recipients to customize gifts before having them dispatched by the retailer or brand. Loop Commerce customers include Lancôme, Bergdorf Goodman, Coach and Neiman Marcus, among others.
