NEW YORK — A small fire broke out at Macy’s Herald Square on Wednesday afternoon, forcing shoppers and workers to evacuate for about an hour.

The fire occurred around 3:30 p.m., but between 4:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. the fire department gave the all clear, and the store reopened for business.

A Macy’s spokeswoman said damage was sustained to a window area on 34th Street, near Broadway, and that the cause of the fire was being investigated. There were no injuries, though the smell of smoke permeated down to the Cellar department.
