Atlanta-based Urban Expositions, which organized Material World shows in Miami and Los Angeles, has decided to stop producing the show after years of declining interest.
The most recent edition of the show took place last month in Los Angeles and was the company’s first attempt at staging a show on the West Coast. The show had partnered with the Los Angeles International Textile Show to locate the exhibitions at the California Market Center in a bid to spur interest. Prior to the move to Los Angeles, Material World hosted a New York edition at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center beginning in 2005.
The move to the West Coast coincided with rising competition for business in the region. Material World faced an immediate challenge from GlobalTex, run by Dallas-based Market Center Management Co. GlobalTex hosted its first show at the Los Angeles Convention Center in May and a second edition late last month. Both shows generated positive responses from buyers and exhibitors.
Material World launched in 2000 as a partnership between Fairchild Publications Inc., which publishes WWD, and Urban Expositions. In 2002, Urban Expositions had entered a new partnership for Material World with the American Apparel & Footwear Association.
