NEW YORK — Peggy Ward, whose 49-year tour of duty with Federated Department Stores Inc. took her to several divisions and from merchandising to administrative roles, died Tuesday at New York Presbyterian Hospital after a long bout with pancreatic cancer.

For many years, Ward was a familiar face at industry events and charity functions. Her most recent title at Federated was consulting vice president. Since 1999, she specialized in organizing principal meetings and retreats, board meetings and philanthropic events.

Ward began her Federated career with the Lazarus department store division in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1957. She joined the Federated Merchandising Group in 1970. In addition to working with Federated division principals, she managed human resources and facilities for Federated Merchandising, which is now called Macy’s Merchandising Group, before moving into her most recent role.

She is survived by her husband, Tom Connelly, and three sisters, Loretta Looney, Geraldine Hofer and Joan Nixon. Private services will be held.
