NEW YORK — With the nation on high terrorist alert, an unattended package in front of Bergdorf Goodman Men’s store caused a commotion between 1 and 2 p.m. Thursday. Bomb squad vehicles and police with assault weapons arrived on the scene and sealed off Fifth Avenue between 57th and 59th Streets, jamming up traffic and forcing BG shoppers to use side entrances. However, Bergdorf’s never closed. “I can assure you, it wasn’t a bomb,” said a police spokesman. Police scrutinized BG’s security film, which showed the package fell off a luggage cart and the owner didn’t notice. “I was so impressed by the police,” said BG chairman Ron Frasch. “They were quick and so alert. These guys are professionals.”
