Roosevelt Field Mall was in lockdown this afternoon after a shooting at a business nearby in East Garden City, N.Y.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for a man who opened fire this morning at a business near the mall, striking two people.
A manhunt is underway for a 63-year-old Asian man who was seen wearing a red shirt, gray or brown jacket and who fled the crime scene in a white SUV that is believed to be a Honda Pilot, a Nassau County Police Department officer said. Police were called to an unidentified business at 645 South Street at 10:10 a.m., according to the officer. The medical conditions and genders of the two victims had not yet been determined, she said.
The Roosevelt Field Mall, the shopping center that is located not far from where the shooting occurred, was placed in lockdown at 10:45 a.m. Shortly before 1 p.m. police were allowing those inside any of the mall’s 270 stores to exit should they choose to.
“No one is being forced to leave,” said a spokeswoman for Simon Properties, which owns the Garden City Mall, an operation with 2.2 million square feet. “We are following the direction of the Nassau County Police Department.”
Roosevelt Field Mall security officials declined to comment on the situation, when reached by phone.
It is unknown what the mall traffic was like when the lockdown was put in place 45 minutes after the stores had opened for the day. Nearby roads remain closed as law enforcement officials continue with their investigation.
While the NCPD could not identify the business where the shooting took place, online listings refer to that address as the Rona K. Corp, Jewelry Design Company. A call to the company was unanswered at press time.
