Steven Sertner has joined Mavi as vice president of sales for North America, overseeing department store and specialty store accounts in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest regions of the U.S. Sertner, who will report to Ardie Ulukaya, senior vice president of sales, will be based in Mavi’s New York corporate office.
Sertner previously held roles including vice president and director of sales at denim and activewear brands such as C&C California Sport, Dollhouse, Silver Jeans and Buffalo jeans. The company said Sertner’s proven track record of calculated planning and producing sustainable growth will be instrumental to its operations in 2017.
“As Mavi continues to grow and expand every year, we are thrilled to bring on Steven with his extensive background in denim and activewear,” Ulukaya said. “Steven’s solid relationships with major and specialty store doors in the U.S. will serve not only as a great foundation to the existing Mavi accounts but further expand Mavi’s reach to include new opportunities.”
Mavi’s sales in the U.S. since 2013 have grown more than 60 percent. The company has added new showrooms and expanded existing ones in six cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami and Atlanta. The L.A. showroom tripled in size following its expansion in 2015. Mavi in 2014 doubled its warehouse space to accommodate the growth.
Founded in Istanbul in 1991, Mavi has been the leading jeans brand in Turkey for the last 24 years and boasts an 18 percent market share. The $440 million company said it sells seven million pairs of jeans per year. Mavi’s network of 387 stores worldwide includes flagships in New York, Berlin, Moscow and Vancouver.
In addition Mavi stores, the brand is sold at Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, Brooklyn Industries, Dusseldorf and Hamburg, Germany-based Peek & Cloppenburg, Breuninger, headquartered in Stuttgart, and Australian department store David Jones. Mavi is usually sold next to premium and high-end denim brands.
