The New York Police Department’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information said the department responded late Tuesday afternoon to a call about a suspicious package at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets. The building was briefly evacuated while the NYPD’s bomb squad investigated along with the fire department.
The package was discovered in the first floor lobby of the building, where the president-elect lives with his family. He was said to be in Florida at the time.
The entire building wasn’t evacuated, the police spokeswoman said. “It was only the first floor,” she added. “The location was deemed safe. It was unattended property.”
The building is home to the Trump Tower Grill, cafe, bar and Trump ice cream parlor. There’s also a Trump store that sells the Donald J. Trump collection and Ivanka Trump handbags and sunglasses, among other items.
Trump Tower has become problematic for retailers in close proximity. There were protests across the street in the days and weeks after Donald J. Trump was elected. Secret service agents and police prominently stand guard in front of the building and barricades line Fifth Avenue starting at Tiffany on the southeast corner and for several blocks south. Gucci at 725 Fifth Avenue has born the brunt of the “Trump effect,” however retailers are said to be riding out the security issues, hoping they subside once the president-elect moves to Washington.
