SHANGHAI — Neighboring Disney’s $6 billion Shanghai amusement park, the latest Chinese property from European discount shopping conglomerate Value Retail opened here on May 19.
The 592,000-square-foot Shanghai Village features 140 designer brand boutiques with discounts of up to 75 percent on fashion, home ware and lifestyle products. This is the second Value Retail outlet in mainland China, following the opening of Suzhou Village in 2014.
These China openings reflect Value Retail’s desire to capitalize on the popularity of its nine European outlet villages with Chinese consumers — who represent the company’s single largest customer demographic.
Shanghai Village is located in the huge Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone in the eastern district of Pudong. The Zone is also home to Shanghai Disney, which will officially open in June.
The design of the village recalls Shanghai’s “Hai Pai” Art Deco past, with nods to Art Deco cities from around the world, including New York, Paris, Milan and Vienna. Continuing the theme, VIP lounges throughout Shanghai Village are devoted to internationally renowned Art Deco artists — such as Georgia O’Keefe and Sonia Delaunay.
“We are very pleased to see the Village’s streets come to life with people enjoying not only the beautiful boutiques, but exploring its architecture, the lounges and our many exhibits,” said Value Retail China chief executive officer Mark Israel. “Shanghai Village will provide an unparalleled shopping experience serving millions of domestic and international visitors to the resort zone, as well as the discerning shoppers of the Greater Shanghai Area.”
