Vitale Barberis Canonico and Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti came out on top in Saks Fifth Avenue’s third annual Fabric No. 1 award, which each fall selects what the retailer believes are the finest fabrics for made-to-measure suits and sport coats. The retailer partners with the Woolmark Company on the award, which was presented to the winners at an event at the Saks flagship on Thursday night.
Tom Ott, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of men’s wear for Saks, said 30 international brands submitted fabrics for consideration this year. Each mill offered up to two cloths from their fall collection in each category and they were judged by Ott and made-to-measure experts at both Saks and Woolmark. The team selected Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti’s wool and cashmere blend in a blue check for the suiting, and Vitale Barberis Canonico’s high blue cashmere/wool blend for sport coats.
“We chose these winners because their meticulously woven fabrics exhibited the many natural qualities of merino wool, including luxuriousness and a lustrous hand,” said Michelle A. Lee, director of the Americas for Woolmark.
Each piece created from a Fabric No. 1 winning fabric will be marked by a number and label, identifying them as one-of-kind garments. Orders will be taken in New York, Chevy Chase, Md., Chicago, San Francisco and Phoenix.
The program will also be promoted by window displays at the Saks flagship and online as well as in print ads.
