Just in time for the holiday shopping season, some Amazon customers received unwelcome news: According to reports, Amazon force-reset some users’ account passwords.

Amazon e-mailed customers to inform them that although the problem has since been fixed, some passwords “may have been improperly stored on your device or transmitted to Amazon in a way that could potentially expose it to a third party.”

The force-reset, it said, was due to an “abundance of caution.”

Representatives for Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and after news of the possible breach, Amazon’s stock was down only slightly, at 1 percent.
