Al Mercato

It can be raining cats and dogs or swelteringly hot but there’s always a long line of people queueing outside Al Mercato. Considered the best destination to get a five-star burger in Milan, this tiny spot on a small street in the residential Corso Italia area, offers yummy, healthier and a tad more sophisticated variations of the classic American burger.

Established by Milanese chefs Beniamino Nespor and Eugenio Roncoroni, both in their 30s, Al Mercato serves a range of burgers with ham, fish or vegetarian options, which can all be customized with ingredients such as jalapeño jam, hummus, avocado and foie gras. The menu also includes several sandwiches, nachos, Al Mercato’s well-known onion rings and French fries, here served with paprika or with truffle and cheese.

The cherry on top is the cool, relaxed atmosphere, which is a mix between an American bar and a modern restaurant, with an open-plan kitchen.
