A spin-off of the TV series, the festival highlights a range of music from rock to hip-hop, blues and country  to avant-garde. Among the groups slated to perform on ACL’s eight stages are: The Raconteurs, Manu Chau, David Byrne, Erykah Badu, Band of Horses, Gnarls Barkley, N.E.R.D., The Swell Season and Robert Earl Keen.

“The performances are really electric, but there is a mellow, polite, easy vibe to Austin and this festival connects with that vibe,” says Sandee Gardner, ACL spokeswoman. “And the food is amazing. It is the best festival food you will ever have.”

That’s because area restaurants and cafes serve their most popular dishes, which naturally includes plenty of  smoked barbecue and Tex-Mex. The festival also features a market of local art, crafts, clothing and accessories as well as Austin Kiddie Limits, where some of the musicians perform short acoustic shows for children.

ACL draws about 55,000 people a day, thousands of whom walk or bike from downtown to avoid traffic jams. Zilker Park is the home of Barton Springs, a 1,000-foot-long natural spring-fed pool that is one of the city’s main attractions.
