The Hamptons being what they are, having an alternate seaside vacation spot in your back pocket isn’t a bad idea. Meet Forty 1° North, a new boutique hotel on Newport, R.I.’s waterfront that opens with a huge party on Saturday.
The property, named for its nautical latitude, has 24 rooms decked out with Tempur-Pedic beds and iPads loaded with a hotel directory, room service menu and a selection of daily newspapers. “Rough calculations show that by doing that, rather than delivering [the papers] in hardcopy, we save approximately 700 pounds of paper waste every month,” says George Moore, one of the hotel’s partners. The two private lofts and two private cottages also include sprawling kitchens.
Designed by Philadelphia-based firm DAS Architects, the building is LEED-certified and eco-friendly from construction to operation. “We were trying to marry design consciousness with eco-consciousness to create something both beautiful and green,” Moore says. But more than environmentalists, Forty 1° North is hoping to attract die-hard boaters with a full-service marina, able to accommodate up to 40 250-foot yachts at a time.
Because sailing to your destination is infinitely easier than being interminably stuck on the L.I.E.
