A new powerhouse is coming to Empire records. The hit Fox series returns for its third season on Sept. 21, and much like last season, has a roster of famous guest stars lined up to add to the drama. On Monday, at an “Empire” panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox co-chairman Dana Walden revealed that Mariah Carey will be joining the series for its third season.
Carey’s episode will air October 5, and she will play a superstar named Kitty who comes in to collaborate with Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett). Fans of the show will recall a similar arc with Alicia Keys last season, when Keys played an international sensation visiting Empire to team with Jamal on a song (and cause a bit of romantic tension along the way).
Carey is reportedly close with “Empire” creator Lee Daniels, and a guest appearance on the show has been teased since season two. Taye Diggs has also been revealed as a guest star on the third season, supposedly as a love interest to Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), along with rapper (and rumored Khloe Kardashian ex) French Montana.
“Empire” is not Carey’s only acting project in the works. According to her IMDb page she will voice a character in the 2017 film “The Lego Batman Movie,” alongside Michael Cera, Will Arnett, Rosario Dawson and Ralph Fiennes. Previous acting credits include the Academy Award winning 2009 film “Precious,” and 2013’s “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” She’s also appeared in less critically favored films like the 1999 Renée Zellweger movie “The Bachelor.”
“Empire” has become well known for the elaborate costume design the cast sports, ranging from Gucci dresses and Moschino for Cookie, to Hood by Air and Baja East for the Lyon boys. One can only imagine what Carey’s character Kitty will show up wearing.
