Costume designer and stylist David Zyla’s first book, “Color Your Style: How to Wear Your True Colors,” originally published in 2011 and did well, so now he and fashion and entertainment journalist Eila Mell are coming out with a new book, “How to Win at Shopping: 297 Insider Secrets for Getting the Style You Want at the Price You Want to Pay,” which will be published by Workman in February. In addition to serving as the costumer of “All My Children,” for which he won an Emmy in 2010, Zyla has worked at Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys New York and for private clients. Mell, the New York editor of fashionWATCH Canada, wrote a book with Heidi Klum, “Project Runway: The Show That Changed Fashion,” and has written for The New York Times and The Huffington Post. “The new book came about because clients said, ‘I wish I could shop with you all the time. Could you just move to my city?’” says Zyla. The idea, he explains, is to make it so that “people can be empowered to shop.” He adds, “In the past couple of years, there’s a lot of variety out there, not stuck on one or two trends, as it has been at various times. But with variety, how do you navigate it? A lot of us will, say, rush to a store in a manic state, try 10 dresses on. And [you’ll] probably choose the one, if you’re shopping in that way, that is the least bad of the 10 but not end up with something that’s fantastic. I believe that everyone deserves to feel fantastic at all times. [‘How to Win at Shopping’ was meant to show] what am I looking for, which trends do I embrace — in a highly portable book.”

There are illustrations throughout by Akane Nakamura and Lucia Bernard. Chapters include “Establishing a Game Plan,” “Finding Your Perfect Match in the Fitting Room” and “Discovering Hidden Treasures,” and there are sections on “Shopping for Your Wedding” and “How to Shed 10 Pounds Just by Getting Dressed.” One of the axioms in “How to Win at Shopping” is “Never wear jewelry for a day of shopping. Jewelry can make an outfit go from average to extraordinary, but it can also be distracting.” Another is “Don’t buy anything too sexy for a first date.”

Zyla often works with well-known people, among them Hillary Clinton, Tom Hanks and Neil Patrick Harris, but he has other clients who are not as prominent — “attorneys, teachers and so on,” he says. He also has an extensive following on social media, including forums on women’s style. “I taught a class this semester at Marymount College on fashion and society,” he adds, “and one of my students did an extraordinary paper on the baseball cap, one piece of sports clothing that has taken on a very powerful existence of its own.”
