City fundraisers can make for some strange bedfellows—as evidenced on Monday night when Martin Scorsese, Robert Duvall, Tom Wolfe and Mayor Michael Bloomberg rubbed elbows with PYTs Amanda Hearst and Lauren Bush at the New York Public Library’s Literary Lions gala. Not surprisingly, Scorsese did not mingle long during the cocktail hour—instead posing briefly for pictures and taking his seat for dinner upstairs.

Guest Jimmy Fallon said, “I read all the time,” but he demonstrated a broad interpretation of the term “literature”: “I read Us Weekly. Does Soduku count?”

Said Bloomberg: “I love nonfiction books and I read eight newspapers a day.” Or his media relations office does.
