The construction on Diane von Furstenberg’s new space at 14th and Washington is finally more or less done, and the designer celebrated on Wednesday night with a crowd that seemed to include every eligible member of the CFDA as well as friends like Ellen Barkin, Sandra Bernhard, Ann Dexter Jones, and Anderson Cooper. “I can’t even remember when we met,” said Bernhard, “but she saw me on Letterman, where I was talking about her line of paper towels” for QVC. Apparently, the designer loved the bit, even if Bernhard did not exactly love the towels. “They had a bit of a problem in the absorption department,” she recalled. Nearby, Marlo Thomas was buying a pair of earrings. “Everyone else is drinking,” she laughed. “I’m shopping. I love Diane. Did you know that $1 from the sale of every wrap dress goes to St. Jude’s Childrens’s Research Hospital? She’s so generous.”

Across town on the roof of the Gramercy Park Hotel, Jacquetta Wheeler was hosting Darna’s second annual quiz night and a slew of society types seemed on the verge of a meltdown. Becca Cason-Thrash¹s team competed against the likes of Michael Kors, Gilles Mendel, Jennifer Creel, Marjorie Raein and a few teams of investment bankers, of which the fashion crowd was duly intimidated. “We’re screwed,” said Andrew Saffir, motioning over to a group from Goldman Sachs. “Everyone on that team wears glasses.”
