The New York Botanical Garden’s Conservatory Ball is probably the last place one would expect to see guests throwing back tequila shots, but Thursday night’s biannual shindig proved to be the exception. Jamee Gregory, Ariana Rockefeller, Gillian Miniter, et al., weaved their trains between waiters proffering shots and margaritas in homage to Frida Kahlo, the subject of the garden’s spring blockbuster exhibit. An all-female mariachi band greeted guests as they made their way through the Palm Gallery to the dinner tent, decorated with colorful Mexican prayer flags. In fact, the theme was so omnipresent it had some guests wondering aloud if there would be table-side guacamole service over dinner. (Tragically, there was not.)
For the first time, Carolina Herrera sponsored the event.
“I love the idea of the botanical garden, I always love flowers and plants,” Carolina Herrera said. “As you can see, all my dresses are prints, so they match perfectly well for the evening.”
Emmy Rossum, Hanneli Mustaparta and Claiborne Swanson Frank all paraded her designs. “She knows how to cut for a female silhouette, she’s feminine and sensual without being obvious,” Rossum said. “And I love wearing prints.”
Not everyone wore the brand’s signature florals though — Constance Jablonski selected a siren-red number. Hitting a certain recognizable pose she said, “I’m dressed like the emoji girl!”
