PARIS — Tommy Hilfiger was the plus-one for a change at a dinner in Paris on Saturday celebrating the opening of a pop-up store at Galeries Lafayette for his wife Dee Ocleppo’s handbag range.
“I love it. I’m very proud of what she’s doing,” he said, as the couple — who were actually co-hosting the bash with Galeries Lafayette director of image and patronage Guillaume Houzé — mingled with the likes of Georgia May Jagger, Kris Jenner, Lauren Santo Domingo and Mario Testino.
Ocleppo snapped selfies with guests on the top floor of Chez Castel, the private club that is enjoying a revival under new ownership. “I was here years and years and years ago, but it did not look like this. They transformed it,” said Hilfiger, casting an eye over the red lacquered walls and phallic carpet design. “It’s funny,” he shrugged.
Ocleppo, who launched her accessories brand last year, said it was especially moving to have a presence in Paris, since she lived here during her modeling days.
“Honestly, when I saw the pop-up tonight for the first time, I started crying. I was embarrassed because I was in front of a lot of people, but I couldn’t hold back the emotion,” she said. “I still pinch myself. It’s a dream come true.”
She hopes to eventually have her own stores, but admitted the product needs a little fine-tuning first.
“I’m very proud and I think the bags are beautiful, but I would like to work on getting some of the price points down so they’re available to more people. When I figure that part out, then I think I’ll open up my own stores, but still be in department stores as well,” Ocleppo said.
In the meantime, she knew just the kind of bag that might appeal to a Parisienne. “I think these envelope clutches, because they’re very simple,” she said, pointing to a display case featuring items from her fall-winter collection, inspired by the Turkish Grand Bazaar. “She sticks her lipstick and a pack of cigarettes in it. Right? She’s good to go.”
