“He’s not performing tonight,” said Tommy Hilfiger, poking a finger toward his pal Lionel Richie after a dinner he hosted at The Ivy in London on Sunday.
While there may have been no stage or microphone in sight, Richie still managed to entertain guests with funny stories about performing in Britain. He’s on the bill at the Glastonbury Festival later this month and is dreading the prospect of rain — and mud.
“I grew up in Alabama, and where I come from, rain plus a microphone equals a shock,” said Richie who is hoping against hope that someone eventually builds a roof over the Glastonbury stage.
He’s also not amenable to wearing Wellies — a Glastonbury staple — because he can’t dance in them. “What’s he talking about? Rain? Mud?” Hilfiger said. “He’s going to arrive in a heli — and leave in a heli when the concert’s over.”
Richie, who is on a European concert tour this summer, said he’s spending the next few days in London, enjoying himself eating, drinking — and shopping. He plans to swoop on the sale racks at Dover Street Market, pay a visit to men’s emporium The Library in South Kensington, and do some antique perusing on the King’s Road.
“Although when they tell me what the price is in pounds, I tend to run out the door,” he admitted.
