It may have been the start of New York Fashion Week, but French actress-turned-director Mélanie Laurent, was in town for an entirely different reason on Wednesday night.
“No, no, I’m here for the screening,” exclaimed a Dior-clad Laurent. She was at the premiere of “Breathe,” her second directorial effort which she also wrote. “I never go to the shows!”
The Cinema Society and Dior Beauty cohosted the screening at the TriBeCa Grand and drew movie-lovers including Rachel Zoe, Kelly Bensimon and Maggie Q.
Guests lingered over gummy bears and popcorn before settling in for the screening of the coming-of-age tale centered on a friendship between two teenage girls that quickly turns dark with jealousy and obsession. “I read the book when I was 15, and I fell in love with the subject — I was in shock,” Laurent said.
Afterward, in the garden at Ladurée Soho, the after party went late into the night. In keeping with the film’s plot, revelers sipped on Qui tequila cocktails, aptly named “Obsession” and “Charlie’s Choice.” As for the woman of the hour? “I’m so jet-legged right now. It’s past midnight for me in Paris,” Laurent said.
