New York’s It girls typically borrow dresses for their various designer-driven engagements. But for the Chanel dinner Tuesday night, held in honor of Vanessa Paradis and her role in the house’s Rouge Coco lipstick campaign, they borrowed the aforementioned lip color. “They sent it to me,” said one downtown type rocking a bold red. “I’m like, I’m not wearing the dress but I am wearing the lip.”

Also sporting a scarlet pout were guests including Paradis, Vanessa Traina, Lauren Santo Domingo and Fabiola Beracasa. In the neutral camp (the Rouge Coco collection also includes paler shades) were Amanda Brooks, Victoria Traina, Allison Sarofim, Marjorie Gubelman, Daphne Guinness, Margherita Missoni, Jacqueline Schnabel and Kate Bosworth. “To be honest, I don’t wear much makeup,” said Bosworth, who resembled a Degas ballerina in a pale pink frock and topknot hairdo.

Patti Smith, who accompanied Paradis, isn’t really one for cosmetics either. “I don’t wear lipstick,” said Smith. “I don’t have anything against it, I just don’t like wearing it.” Smith instead chose to make a statement with her ensemble: a t-shirt from Monday night’s Help for Haiti benefit. “You know, we should think about it everyday,” she said. “I thought, well, if there will be a lot of photographers here, what would be the best thing I could offer?”
