Long before they arrived sporting the boyfriend jeans that established Current/Elliott as one of the buzziest denim brands to hit the market this century, Emily Current and Meritt Elliott fine-tuned their girlish tomboy aesthetic on starlets such as Emma Roberts. In the past few years, they’ve extended their creative reach to collaborations with Kate Spade New York and Pottery Barn. Three years after departing from Current/Elliott, they’re readying to launch their contemporary label, The Great, at retail this month. As new style ambassadors for Old Navy, the longtime friends share what they love and what they would like to clean out of their closets this spring.

WWD: What’s a must-have for spring?
Emily Current: I’m obsessed with the boyfriend shirt…I’m into unbuttoning and wearing it loose with all my necklaces underneath.
Meritt Elliott: I’m a T-shirt girl. The boyfriend tee is great. It’s oversize. I love wearing it under a blazer.
WWD: What’s a trend that you love for spring?
E.C.: Head-to-toe white. You can wear a white sweater and white jeans and be comfortable even when it’s freezing.
M.E.: We are really into sneakers right now. For spring, the easy way to wear that is not with the bells and whistles. You can slip them on with a sundress or jean shorts.
WWD: Which trend should women discard for spring?
M.E.: Body-con dresses. This spring it’s about feeling effortless. And anything that feels restrictive and trying too hard, throw it away.
