Looks like the awards season race is officially heating up.
Lionsgate released the second trailer for the upcoming musical film “La La Land,” starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The first trailer released earlier this summer featured vocals by Gosling, but this time around the visually stunning clip features a ballad sung by Stone. Set in modern day Los Angeles, Stone plays an aspiring actress in the film, while her onscreen romantic interest Gosling portrays a struggling jazz musician.
It’s the latest jazz-themed effort from “Whiplash” director and writer Damien Chazelle, who garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for the 2014 film. J.K. Simmons took home an Oscar for best supporting actor for his portrayal of a hard-hitting musical instructor in “Whiplash”; he is reuniting with Chazelle for the upcoming feature — perhaps in a similar role, which is billed evasively as “Boss.”
“La La Land” will open the 73rd Venice International Film Festival on August 31 and is set for a wide theatrical release in December.
