LOS ANGELES — Don’t drink and dress goes the fashion circle adage, but a touch of wine before a runway show isn’t a bad thing, figured Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez, who, along with partner Jack McCullough, shared the house’s fall collection with some 350 supporters of The Rape Foundation on Thursday night.
The annual benefit was cohosted by Barneys New York, Christina Ricci and Kerry Washington. Once again, foundation board member Heather Thomas opened up her Santa Monica estate for the party, but this year the foundation decided to display the clothes after dinner.
“We’ve never done a show for a buzzed crowd before,” Hernandez mused. “But I think it’ll be fun.” A little vino certainly loosened up the auction post-entrée, with Martin Katz’s other half, Kelly, rallying up friends such as Rashida Jones, her mom Peggy Lipton, Vanessa Traina, Brigette Romanek, Estella Warren, Tori Spelling and Lisa Eisner — who threw down $6,800 for a three-of-a-kind Proenza Schouler feather jacket. “Look out for Big Bird,” joked her Greybull Press partner Roman Alonso.
“Look, now I’m a photographer, too,” purred Washington as she snapped away on a mini camera supplied by the event’s co-host Hewlett-Packard. By midnight, an entourage that included the designers and several Barneys folk, led by Julie Gilhart, as well as Alonso, Eisner and other pals, piled onto the patio of the Beverly Hills Hotel for more wine, cigarettes and, to ward off the chill, tea. “I don’t want tonight to end yet,” sighed McCullough.
