Los Angeles County Museum of Art held its 25th Annual Collectors Committee gala Saturday night, where board members including Willow Bay, Jami Gertz, Lynda Resnick and Bill Bell bid on paintings and yacht vacations to raise funds to acquire new works for the museum. “We have a few pieces of art on our shopping list,” said LACMA president Michael Govan, who was able to buy seven of them with the proceeds from the live auction, lead by a smooth-talking Jamie Niven of Sotheby’s.
“‘Let’s keep things moving or people will blame me if they don’t get their entrees tonight,” Niven said to the crowd.
Disney chief Robert Iger said he wasn’t a regular at the LACMA auctions (even though wife Bay is on the board), but that he still has plenty of experience bidding on art—buying old photos of his wife from her Estee Lauder modeling days on Ebay.
“If some guy is selling photos of my wife, I’m going to buy them,” Iger explained.
Bay added, “It’s not exactly high stakes auctions, but it’s very sweet.”
