With both excitement and trepidation, New York’s fashionable types left the beach, coming face to face — and closer — at a party to celebrate the opening of Tamara Mellon’s new Jimmy Choo boutique. “You could get in a fistfight in there or you could get felt up,” said Ghislaine Maxwell, prying herself out of a crowd that included Nina Griscom, Rena Sindi, Gigi Mortimer, Jennifer Creel, Marisa Brown, Emilia Fanjul Pfeifler and Nancy Jarecki.
Claire Danes, just back from London, where she was filming a movie with Billy Crudup, fought her way in to get a look at the latest stilettos. “What girl doesn’t love them?” Danes asked.
Bebe Neuwirth championed Choos, too. “If they can make a beat-up dancer like me feel comfortable, then they must be great,” said Neuwirth.
Then Caroline Berthet led the whole group to dinner at Mr. Chow, where Nicky Hilton, just back from a trip to Tokyo, bemoaned not the end of the summer, but the end of an era. “In October, it’s my birthday,” Hilton said. “I won’t be a teenager anymore. I’m turning 20.”
The next night, they were all at it again, checking out the elegant new Yves Saint Laurent boutique at a cocktail party to benefit New Yorkers for Children. “It’s a shock to be back,” said Jamee Gregory, who spent her summer in Maine and the Hamptons. “I haven’t even been wearing shoes.” Yvonne Force, Amy Sacco, BJ Topol, Sally Tadayon Albemarle, Elisabeth Kisselstein Cord and Amanda Hearst all made their way through the boutique’s sleek halls and were surprised to find old friends around every corner.
For her part, Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, dressed in a chic look from the new YSL collection, seemed the one woman ready for everything fall has in store. “To the people who complain about bad weather, I say, ‘Find something else to be happy about,’” Kanavos reported. “‘Wear bright colors and try something new.’”
