As the pressure to dress stars escalates, it should come as no surprise that money has become involved as well. Certain A-list stars are said to have reneged on promises to wear the jewels of other houses in favor of Chopard. Indeed, some actresses admitted to having been approached by the house with six-figure deals to wear its pieces for the Globes and Oscars. Chopard spokeswoman Stephanie Labeille denied having formal contracts with Hilary Swank and Charlize Theron, among others (the Swiss house dressed several lesser-known actresses also), but said, “There has been money exchanged in the past, but it happens with other jewelers too. Some stars or members of their entourage want money.” Sources close to the actresses also confirmed that deals have been brokered through stars’ managers. “It’s no secret that Hilary Swank has a contract with Calvin Klein and that Nicole Kidman has one with Chanel, so why should jewelry be a secret?” asked one stylist. Perhaps if all the deals were out in the open the nasty rumors would abet, but then again, so would some of the mystery and glamour.
