The strategy worked for girls like Amanda Seyfried, Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz and Diane Kruger, since Vanity Fair’s bash at the Sunset Tower Hotel was packed like sardines. Carey Mulligan opted to stay in her hefty black Prada dress and paid for it by heaving her train around with her everywhere she walked.
On the back patio, Charlize Theron and Kid Rock smoked cigarettes, Hilary Swank chowed down on an In-n-Out burger and Meryl Streep, pregnant Amy Adams and Chris Messina held a little “Julie & Julia” reunion. Inside, Jackie and Joan Collins lounged on a banquette, while Ryan Phillippe did his best to steer clear of ex-wife Reese Witherspoon and ex-girlfriend Abbie Cornish.
But the biggest star in the room this year was Best Director winner Kathryn Bigelow, who received a standing ovation when she arrived. Swank and Mulligan were among the actors quick to congratulate the Oscar winner (and perhaps ask to get in on her next project). “Kathryn, my dream came true,” said an emphatic and completely serious Josh Lucas. “This was in my dream last night.”
The other hot topic of conversation was Madonna’s late night bash. Everyone asked everyone else if they were going, but few found anyone who was.
Nevertheless, the crowd had pretty much cleared out by 2 am, whether party goers decided between the sand man or the Material Girl.
