It was a whirlwind week for Hollywood newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who, after the Essence luncheon, also attended MaxMara’s Women in Film cocktail party at the Bel-Air home of Peter and Tara Guber, where actresses Camilla Belle, Ali Landry, Michelle Rodriguez and Mena Suvari joined MAC Cosmetics chief executive John Demsey to celebrate the year’s female nominees. Landry, who is pitching a book series to go along with her children’s clothing line Belle Parish, said this year’s event was beautiful – and somewhat comical – for her.
“At last year’s party, when I walked in, someone pinned a gardenia on me, but didn’t realize that the gardenias meant you were a nominee. When someone asked me what I was nominated for, I didn’t know what to say,” she laughed.
Belle, who just wrapped the film “From Prada to Nada” in Mexico, said this year’s awards season attitude was decidedly upbeat.“It’s nice to know that there’s a more festive feeling, it’s good for all of us because if people loosen up there’s a more positive attitude toward work and the economy in general,” said the 23-year-old actress, who is studying Italian in her free time. “With all the parties, there are lots of places to go, so you have to pick carefully or you’ll end up driving all over town. Still,” she added, “on Sunday I think I have a date with my couch.”
