President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act, which requires all 50 U.S. states to recognize all marriages — regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation — and provide same-sex couples with federal benefits. The ceremony was held in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 13, 2022. First lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harries joined the event, as well as singers Cyndi Lauper and Sam Smith.
