NEW YORK — Xcel Brands Inc. has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with United Legwear Co. LLC to produce and distribute legwear for the Isaac Mizrahi New York brand.
The collection will be available at retail for fall 2012. Distribution will be aimed at major department and specialty stores.
Mizrahi described the legwear as a “fun, central subject in fashion.
“I start most collections thinking about legwear. It’s like starting a meal with dessert,” said Mizrahi, who serves as creative director of Xcel Brands.
The range of legwear and socks will include opaque and patterned tights, leggings, control-top sheer hosiery, and trouser socks. Patterns will include swiss dots, large dots, houndstooth, herringbone and lace. Fashion tights will be rendered primarily in blends of 83 percent nylon and 17 percent spandex, which will enhance the recovery level of tights to snap back into shape.
“This license is a great addition to our growing brand,” said Robert D’Loren, chairman and chief executive officer of Xcel Brands. The company, a specialist in branded consumer products that focus on designers, celebrities and social media, acquired Isaac Mizrahi New York in September for about $31.5 million.
Mizrahi fits the bill as a multimedia personality.
Since his first collection in 1987, Mizrahi has been awarded four CFDA awards, including a special award in 1996 for the film “Unzipped.” In December 2009, he launched his lifestyle collection, IsaacMizrahiLive on QVC. Mizrahi has also become a TV celebrity with his role on “Project Runway All Stars” for Lifetime, “The Fashion Show” for Bravo and his own series for both Oxygen and the Style Network.
Isaac Ash, president and ceo of United Legwear, said, “The Isaac Mizrahi brand stands for timeless, cosmopolitan style with a bit of irreverence, some humor and a lot of confidence. ULC will be able to translate those key elements into tights and socks that will be meaningful at retail.”
Founded in 1998 by Ash, United Legwear is a global manufacturer of socks, legwear and bodywear for children men and women.
