LOS ANGELES — J Brand is teaming up with Los Angeles designer Henry Duarte to create three low-rise skinny jeans styles inspired by David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” album.
The capsule collection, which will retail for about $250, will launch at Coterie in New York and hit U.S. stores in December and select specialty stores worldwide early next year.
“Like our initiatives with Topshop and Hussein Chalayan, this collection is part of our strategy to keep customers curious and interested,” said J Brand co-founder Jeff Rudes.
“Knowing we wanted to do a rocker and biker chic story for early spring, we thought Henry would be a natural,” Rudes said of Duarte, who made his name designing clothes for musicians Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz and Steven Tyler, and actresses Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman. “It’s also a chance to bring some new customers into the fold because he has such a following.”
Co-founder Susie Crippen added, “We’re excited to build our brand and learn from Henry.”
“I wanted to combine my signature details with the simplicity that J Brand is known for, while keeping the jeans wearable and affordable,” said Duarte.
The Raygun style, in indigo with a shiny spray tint wash, features exposed zippers with custom pulls and seaming and topstitching with a Space Age feel. The Ziggy has handmade hardware, zipper accents and a soft black wash. The Suffragette is a take on Duarte’s signature lace-up front jeans with a pigment rub wash.
Like J Brand’s Boutique line launched earlier this year, the J Brand-Henry Duarte jeans will sell in stores such as Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Intermix and Ron Herman, as well as Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.
“We want to give the stores that helped launch us something special that’s not everywhere,” said Rudes. “We’re all about reordering, but we want to limit the distribution.”
He added the collaboration will likely be a short-term project, “but depending on what we see, it could go into next fall with another wash.”
