Berlin got a flash preview of the Beckham for Belstaff collection on Thursday, a capsule of nine easy-to-ride-in pieces that will hitBelstaff stores worldwide and belstaff.com in March and roll out toother selected stores in June.
David Beckham, who is also theface of the British heritage brand’s 2014 global advertising campaign, was on hand at Soho House to introduce his latest fashion collaboration.“It’s obviously a very British brand, and they design clothes I like towear, especially as I ride a bike a lot,” Beckham said. “They got mestraight away.”
He said working with the Belstaff creative teamin New York was “really easy. The mood board in the offices was filledwith pictures of me riding a bike, plus Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.I’ve always loved Steve McQueen. Even wearing something as simple as awhite T-shirt, to me he’s the epitome of effortless style.”
Thecollection was so fresh from the sample makers that no photos have yetbeen taken, which didn’t keep Beckham from donning the multizippedleather motorcycle pants, not the usual Beckham gear. In fact, the lasttime he had on a pair of leather pants was in 1999, when he wasphotographed in matching outfits with his wife, Victoria.
“I wearjeans most of the time, but I did feel that if I could get away withwearing leather pants, Berlin’s the place to do it,” he remarked with alaugh.
Everything, he said, is “in or on its way” to hiswardrobe, though it should be noted that the collection’s leatherlace-up boots and simple pouch wallet took the opposite route. “Thoseare my boots and my wallet,” two vintage items he’s used for severalyears and which underscore the worn-in look that marks the capsulerange.
In his view, the special piece is the grayish blueleather jacket, protectively but still subtly quilted on the shouldersand arms. “I love the blue, and it’s something I’d wear on or off mybike,” Beckham commented. Inspired by pieces from the almost-90-year-oldcompany’s archive, the collection also includes a dark red bikerjacket, a simple black leather jacket, a multipocket waxed cottonall-round jacket, a canvas shoulder bag and cotton twill motocrosspants. Prices are on par with the Belstaff core collection, the companysaid, and range from $395 to $1,895.
And what does Victoriathink of his latest gig? “She’s very proud. When I was in New York withthe team, I kept sending her pictures of the stuff we were doing, andshe was almost more excited than I was,” he said.
The labeling isdefinitely low-key, with the words “Belstaff - 1924 - Certified -Authentic - Beckham” stamped in faded gray on the lining. There’s also avintage-looking Beckham 2014 Belstaff badge marking the products, whichhis two-year-old daughter selected. “I had a number of badges to choosefrom, I laid them all out in front of Harper and she picked it,” saidBeckham.
He made a second stylish appearance in Berlin laterThursday night, when he was named GQ Man of the Year in the “Style”category at the awards ceremony in the city’s Komische Oper.
