PARIS — French fashion’s top governing body said Monday it would create an executive committee to bolster its independence and speed decision making in a fast-moving industry.

Among the committee’s first orders of business once elected next month will be to propose to the executive board a candidate for the federation’s next president.

Didier Grumbach, president of the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode since 1998, said he would consider running for another two-year term.
“If they all ask me to do it, I will,” he said, adding, “When I say all, it’s all.”

Grumbach explained that adding an executive committee would inject “dynamism” to an organization charged with preserving Paris’ reputation as the world capital of fashion design.

The new executive committee is to have a maximum of five members, each charged with a specific mission, among them emerging brands, international outreach and the fashion show calendars.

“It’s a protection for the future,” Grumbach said. “It also shows how important it is for the members that there is a strong organization. After all, we are very international.”

The federation comprises three trade associations, each known as a Chambre Syndicale, for high fashion, women’s ready-to-wear and men’s fashions. Together, they boast about 100 corporate members, including companies from France, Japan, Italy and Belgium, reflecting the global nature of fashion.

Its executive board consists of 18 members, ranging from the chief executives of Christian Dior and Chanel fashion to the independent designer Anne Valérie Hash.

Each season, Paris hosts about 30 shows for couture, 40 for men’s wear and 150 for women’s wear, attended by up to 2,000 journalists.
