Based in Kolkata, India, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has his eyes set on bringing his brand to international markets. The Lane Crawford special capsule collection is his first major step into East Asia.
The 39-piece capsule collection made exclusively for the department store is available in the Hong Kong Lane Crawford locations and online.
Mukherjee said he adapted his aesthetic with a more pared down sensibility for the Chinese customer. A visit to the China Club inspired the collection.
Mukherjee identifies not just as an Indian brand but one specifically from Kolkata, a hotbed for creativity on the subcontinent.
Originally an economics grad, Mukherjee started his brand in 2001 out of his parent’s home. He’s since built it into a business that sees $45 million a year, with 85 percent of that coming from bridalwear.
Mukherjee hopes to open stores in New York, London and the Middle East by the third quarter of 2019.
Employing over 3,000 people, Sabysachi wants to branch his business out into two separate divisions: one for the Indian customer and the second for the international shopper.
