Perry Ellis has a new designer and will return to the runway in September.

Michael Maccari has joined the label as creative director and will oversee design direction for all Perry Ellis product categories, including collection sportswear and licensed product.

Maccari, who was fashion director and senior vice president of design for Armani Exchange, has also worked with Polo Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan New York. He is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology.

“I’m trying to get my head around how [Perry Ellis] thought and his influences at the time,” Maccari said, pointing to the late designer’s unique “take on American sportswear and play on proportion.” The challenge, he added, will be “to take that forward and bring it up to date.”

Maccari said Oscar Feldenkreis, president and chief operating officer of Perry Ellis International, “wants to take the Perry Ellis label to another level,” exploit the brand’s “fashion relevancy, and put us back on the map.”

Feldenkreis said Maccari is “an experienced designer who brings a proven ability to guide lifestyle brands through their design needs. We are thrilled to have him spearheading the design team here as he interprets the legacy of Perry Ellis.”

Maccari’s first collection will be for spring 2015 and it will be shown during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York in September. The show will mark the brand’s return to the schedule after a two-season hiatus.

Before Maccari, Perry Ellis had a collaboration with Duckie Brown designers Daniel Silver and Steven Cox that lasted one year. John Crocco had served as creative director of the main collection before that.
