LONDON — Michael Kors has launched its largest flagship in Europe.
Located on 179 Regent Street, the 16,275-square-foot store spans three floors that feature a new design concept created by the brand’s in-house team.
“London is one of the world’s fashion capitals, and the shopping on Regent Street is parallel to none,” Kors told WWD. “It really represents what Michael Kors is all about — this fast, jet-set, glamorous lifestyle. I think Regent Street has the ultimate mix of customers, so they’ll love being able to shop for everything from a glamorous gown to a cool sneaker all in one place.”
The new flagship will carry the full range of products, including Michael Kors Collection rtw and accessories; men’s rtw and accessories; Michael Michael Kors rtw and accessories; watches, jewelry, and eyewear.
Kors added that London’s “varied mix of styles and attitudes are a continuous source of inspiration. The variety of personal styles — everyone from East End hipsters to the glamour crowd — makes London particularly interesting to me as a designer. The customers have such personal style and find what’s right for them. Having a point of view is a hallmark of British style.”
The brand has closed its former store, at 223 Regent Street.
While the company declined to give any first-year sales projections, real estate sources have estimated the annual rent is upward of 12 million pounds, or $17.6 million.
The interiors feature Macassar wood floors and tables, brushed stainless steel shelves, Venetian wallpaper and Calacatta marble fixtures. The company combined a palette of browns, grays and natural wood tones with textural finishes and luxe materials.
“We wanted to create a very warm, inviting experience for both women and men,” added Kors. “There are a lot of tactile materials, including a stone runway that will guide people from the front door through the various shopping experiences. Each floor is focused on a different category, with the lower floor being men’s, the ground floor centered on accessories, and the top floor all about ready-to-wear, so it will be easy for our customers to find what they’re looking for. It also provides a sophisticated browsing experience for those days when they have a little more time. “
The ground floor carries shoes and accessories collections, including handbags, leather goods, watches, jewelry and eyewear. A two-story wall is devoted to Michael Kors Collection handbags. The first floor offers the label’s rtw; Michael Kors Collection; and the Michael Michael Kors range. The lower level houses the men’s shop with sportswear, outerwear, dress shirts and ties, bags and small leather goods.
The brand plans to host a store opening event in late June.
Kors is the latest big American fashion brand to land on London’s Regent Street, following the opening last month of Kate Spade New York’s largest U.K. store. Brooks Brothers, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew and Banana Republic are already fixtures on the main thoroughfare while Polo Ralph Lauren plans to open a flagship on the corner of Regent and New Burlington Street this summer.
The store, the first Polo unit in the U.K., will span a total of 17,550 square feet over three floors, and will carry men’s and women’s wear. The first stand-alone Polo store for men and women opened on Fifth Ave in New York City in August 2014.
Most of the new retail properties are owned by The Crown Estate, the commercial business that was established by Act of Parliament, with all profits going to the British Treasury for the benefit of the nation. The Crown Estate has been refurbishing great swathes of central London, including Regent Street and the neighborhoods around Piccadilly and Leicester Square.
