Sustainability is arguably the most important issue today in fashion and beauty. More than just a trend or fad, consumers — especially Generation Z and Millennials — now expect sustainability as a core element in the fashion and beauty brands they shop from, analyzing everything down to the ingredients, packaging and manufacturing process. In honor of Earth Month, fashion resale web site, @ThredUp, launched its “Choose Used” campaign fronted by actress Olivia Wilde. With Wilde, the company redesigned thousands of used clothing displaying slogans like “I Wear Used Clothes” and “Used Goods” and will be donating 10 percent of net proceeds to the Circular Fashion Foundation, an organization that supports sustainable businesses and individuals in the fashion space. Is fashion the next big oil? In honor of Earth Day, WWD Executive Editor @boothmoore examines the impact of fashion on the environment. Last week, Extinction Rebellion, the activist group that has shut bridges and poured buckets of fake blood outside Downing Street, parked a giant pink boat in London’s Oxford Circus blocking the flow of commerce in one of most heavily trafficked shopping areas in the world. Meanwhile, it seems everyone is jumping on the green bandwagon for Earth Day. There is the new lingerie brand made of recycled bottles; a fledgling business that donates 10 trees for every item of clothing sold; new, 100 percent recyclable surf trunks, and on and on. While I’m sure many of these brands and entrepreneurs are well-intended, do we really need any of it or do we just need less of what we already have? Maybe we can start by simply saying no once in a while, no to buying more and no to making more. Because at the end of the day, it’s all just stuff, even when it’s glorious, gorgeous fashion. Emmy-Award winning style pundit, fashion designer, and New York Times best-selling author, Carson Kressley has won the Jefferson Spirit of Design Award. Gemma Chan and Olivia Munn received awards for their work in the Asian-American community at the Apex Awards Gala. Apex is an organization which aids underserved Asian and immigrant communities in New York City. The importance of family and real representation were both major topics discussed at the Gala. “It’s very important that we realize it’s not just checking a box,” Chan said. “And there’s a difference between diversity and representation. Adidas has launched a completely recycled running shoe with Willow Smith as the face of the marketing effort. “If we can return, we reciprocate, we regenerate….The future is about giving back,” Smith said. The shoe that is the latest move in Adidas' mission to reduce plastic waste. It is made from 100 percent reuseable thermoplastic polyurethane, that is spun to yarn, knit, molded and clean-fused using the company’s Speedfactory technology. Once the shoes are ready to be replaced, they are intended to be returned to Adidas, where they will be washed, ground to pellets and melted into material that will be used to create a new pair. Jennifer Lopez will receive the Fashion Icon award at the upcoming CFDA Awards.
