PARIS — Thieves rammed the doors of the Chanel boutique on Avenue Montaigne here with an SUV early this morning and proceeded to steal a stash of handbags.
A police officer at the scene confirmed to WWD the break-in at 42 Avenue Montaigne took place around 5:30 a.m.
While some media reported the value of the grab at more than 300,000 euros, police said an investigation was opened and could not immediately give an estimate of the merchandise.
The perpetrators torched the SUV and fled the scene.
At around 11:15 a.m., the store remained closed, with the damaged gate partially down and police officers patrolling. The burnt vehicle was loaded on a tow truck.
The store was supposed to open at 10 a.m.
