The Gray Lady has appointed a new tastemaker. Cathy Horyn, who joined the New York Times as a fashion reporter in January, has been named fashion critic — only the second in the paper’s history. The first was Amy Spindler, who went to the New York Times Magazine as style editor in September 1998.
“I think Cathy has turned out to be everything we hoped she’d be in hiring her,” said Trip Gabriel, fashion news editor at the Times. “She’s made runway reviewing, which can be boring and irrelevant, into a compelling, must-read report, the way people follow movie reviews.”
Gabriel said Horyn’s role won’t change much, but she’ll be able to write “Critic’s Notebook,” a hybrid between reportage and reviews.
“It involves a lot more editorializing than a reporter could get away with in the news columns,” said Gabriel.
It looks like Libet’s in love again. The Swifty’s set is enjoying the rumor that Libet Johnson — whose love life has always been a little topsy-turvy — has recently taken up with her hairdresser, Frederic Fekkai.
