FILENE’S BASEMENT TO CLOSE 34 UNITS BY END OF YEAR
NEW YORK — In a huge restructuring to try to pull out of bankruptcy, Filene’s Basement plans to close 34 stores, leaving just 14 Basement off-price units and eight Aisle Three discount warehouse units.
The locations and total number of stores to be shuttered was released Tuesday by Keen Realty Consultants Inc., which will try to sell off the locations and leases.
In September, Filene’s Basement announced 19 locations.
The chain subsequently said that additional closings would occur, but didn’t specify how many.
The Aisle Three discount warehouse stores are opened for business Fridays through Sundays.
In New York, Filene’s Basement plans to close four stores on Long Island — three in Carle Place and one in Huntington — and a unit in Scarsdale. In Washington, D.C., the retailer will shutter two stores.
Some of the 34 stores have already been closed, following going-out-of-business sales. All are expected to be closed by the end of the year.
Other sites being closed are located in Manchester, Orange and West Hartford, Conn.; Chicago, Oakbrook and Skokie, Ill.; Burlington, Framingham, Holyoke, N. Attleboro and Worcester, Mass.; Rockville, Md.; S. Portland, Maine.; Bloomington, Minn.; Manchester, Nashua and Salem, N.H.; Jersey City, Moorestown and Paramus, N.J.; Berwyn, Philadelphia, Radnor and Willow Grove, Pa.; Warwick, R.I., and Falls Church, Va.
The bankruptcy court auction for the sites is expected to be held in mid-January, according to a spokeswoman for Keen Realty.
Filene’s Basement filed its Chapter 11 petition last August.
Last month, the company said it will end the year with 3,000 employees and a core concentration of stores in the New York, Chicago and Massachusetts.
The retailer’s legendary downtown flagship in Boston will continue to operate.
