NEW YORK — Ulta, the expanding combination beauty and salon retailer, has tapped Lyn Kirby as president and chief executive officer. Terry Hanson, former president and ceo, assumes the title of chairman of the company based in Romeoville, Ill.
Kirby is the former president of Circle of Beauty, Sears’ proprietary beauty line. Under her direction, Circle of Beauty’s assortment expanded to include products that attract younger customers as well as offer a larger assortment of color choices. Industry sources estimate Circle of Beauty now has yearly retail sales exceeding $150 million. Comp-store sales are up in the double digits, according to Kirby.
A 20-year veteran of the beauty business, Kirby has worked for Avon in her native country of Australia, as well as for Gryphon Development. At Gryphon, she was vice president and general manager of new business from 1995 to 1997, working on products for Limited, Too, Warner Bros. and Sears.
“This is an interesting opportunity in a different retail segment,” said Kirby, of Ulta’s format that merges salon services with retail products. The chain’s newest prototype in Irving, Tex., features everything from massages to a phone and fax area in the salon waiting area. The store even offers a baby-sitting referral service.
