SAME-STORE SALES AT BEBE’S UP 11.8 PERCENT IN AUGUST
BRISBANE, Calif. — Boosted by strong sales of novelty items, same-store sales at contemporary women’s retailer Bebe Stores Inc. climbed 11.8 percent in August, the firm reported Tuesday.
Total retail sales for the month climbed 31.5 percent to $19.2 million from $14.6 million.
The same-store-sales gain comes on top of a 27.5 percent improvement in August 1998 and a 59.7 percent jump in August 1997, Bebe said. Strong novelty sellers included embroidered denim pants, embroidered capri pants and embellished tops, Blair Lambert, chief financial officer said. Bebe’s suit business was also very strong, according to Lambert.
For the two months ended Aug. 31, same-store sales climbed 15 percent. Total sales for the two months jumped 37.6 percent to $36.6 million from $26.6 million a year earlier. Bebe operates 100 stores in the U.S., one store in the U.K. and one store in Canada. It also sells from its web site at bebe.com.
